A fantastically entertaining match at the Stadio Olimpico comes to a close as Milan win their 10th match in 11 - beating Roma by a score of 2-1. Ibrahimovic’s first-half free-kick goal gave the visitors the lead, which Kessie doubled from the penalty spot after the veteran Swedish striker was brought down in the area by Ibanez. Despite the Rossoneri going down to 10 men for 25 minutes after Hernandez was sent off for a second bookable offence - Roma were unable to fashion many clear-cut chances - relying on shots from distance to test Tatarusanu. Former Rossoneri winger El Shaarawy was able to cut the deficit deep in injury time, but Mourinho’s side were unable to find the equaliser as the Giallorossi are defeated for the second time in four Serie A games. The win puts Milan joint-top while Roma stay fourth.

Roma host Bodo/Glimt in the Europa Conference League on Thursday, ahead of a trip to Venezia next Sunday. Milan welcome Porto to the San Siro on Wednesday ahead of a home fixture against Inter in the derby on Sunday.

That concludes our commentary of the Serie A fixture between Roma and Milan! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!

  1. 90'+8'

    FULL-TIME: ROMA 1-2 MILAN. 22:44

  2. 90'+7'

Veretout is shown a very late yellow card for a terrible challenge on Tonali just as the final whistle was being blown. 22:44

  3. 90'+5'

Perez cuts inside ahead of Kessie and fires a powerful curling effort - forcing a wonderful diving save out of Tatarusanu!22:41

  4. 90'+3'

EL SHAARAWY GETS ONE BACK! Veretout’s cross was scrambled away by the head of Romagnoli - who could only push it to the edge of the 18-yard box. The Roma substitute jumps on the loose ball and hammers a shot high into the roof of the net, cutting the lead to 2-1!

  5. 90'+1'

The fourth official indicates six minutes will be added to the end of the 90 for stoppages. 22:37

  6. 89'

Pellegrini hits a Roma corner looking for Afena-Gyan, but it’s cleared immediately by the head of Calabria.22:37

  7. 87'

Perez passes it back to Mancini, who lets fly from 25 yards out. It’s a confident effort from the centre-back, but he misses the target by a considerable distance as time continues to work against Roma.22:33

  8. 85'

Milan could become the third team in Serie A history to win 15 away matches in a single calendar year, after Napoli in 2017 (18) and Juventus in 2018 (15).22:30

  9. 83'

KJAER PREVENTS A GOAL! The former Roma centre-back reads the play perfectly as Pellegrini takes the set-piece short to Veretout before receiving it again. The captain fires a cross to the far post for an unmarked Zaniolo, who looks to have beaten Tatarusanu, but not Kjaer who makes the all-important stop!22:57

  10. 81'

Kessie is shown Milan's eighth yellow card of the match for preventing Zaniolo from taking a Roma free-kick. 22:50

  11. 80'

Mourinho makes another attacking change as Karsdorp is taken off, to be replaced by Shomurodov. 22:27

  12. 79'

Milan have moved to a back five in order to hold the lead, with the newly introduced Romagnoli lining up alongside Tomori and Kjaer. Calabria and Ballo-Toure occupy the wing-back positions while Tonali, Kessie and Bakayoko are stationed in front of them as a shield.22:25

  13. 77'

Giroud is handed a booking for a foul on Zaniolo during an aerial duel. 22:56

  14. 76'

Bakayoko is sent on for Krunic in a defensive move by Pioli. 02:52

  15. 76'

Romagnoli takes to the pitch to face his former side, as Bennacer is recalled to the bench. 22:23

  16. 76'

Tonali replaces Leao as Milan look to shut up shop with 15 minutes left. 22:23

  17. 74'

A limping El Shaarawy returns to the pitch and immediately looks to cut inside before firing a shot - but the low effort never looked likely to trouble Tatarusanu.22:20

  18. 73'

El Shaarawy is down holding his knee after a collision with Krunic in midfield. The winger has only been on the pitch for 10 minutes but it appears as though his evening could be in doubt as he hobbles off the pitch to receive treatment.22:19

  19. 71'

The momentum of the match has shifted completely as Milan are tasked with holding on to the lead for the final 20 minutes in the face of wave after wave of Roma attacks.22:56

  20. 69'

Pellegrini takes the ensuing Roma free-kick, but the captain catches the top of the wall - popping the ball up in the air for an easy Tatarusanu catch. 22:15

  21. 68'

Mourinho sends Perez on for Vina as he looks to get something from the match. 22:15

  22. 68'

Milan make a change immediately after going down to 10 men, as left-back Ballo-Toure replaces Saelemaekers. 22:14

  23. 67'

Calabria is booked for protesting the sending-off - putting further pressure on the full-back. 22:14

  24. 66'

HERNANDEZ IS SENT OFF! The left-back looks to stop Pellegrini’s progress into the penalty area and goes into a clumsy challenge - which prompts the referee to brandish a yellow card. Having already been booked, the France international is given his marching orders, meaning he will miss next week’s Milan derby!22:14

  25. 65'

Tomori is booked for time-wasting during a Milan set-piece deep in their own half. 22:11

  26. 63'

Abraham's match is over after 63 minutes as El Shaarawy takes his place. 22:10

  27. 61'

The first-ever meeting between Mourinho and Pioli has gone very much the way of the latter, whose side are dominating possession, total passes and shots. Despite a furious start from the Giallorossi, they’ve failed to respond to Ibrahimovic’s opener 35 minutes ago.22:13

  28. 59'

Roma have 30 minutes to get themselves back into the match at the Olimpico. They’ve shown less in the second half going forward, as Milan have grown in confidence as the game has progressed. With Zaniolo and Pellegrini on the pitch a goal is always possible, but they’re going to have to put Tatarusanu under pressure; failing to fire a shot on target thus far.22:07

  29. 57'

Giroud is sent on for Ibrahimovic just before the hour as the booked forward is given a rest ahead of Milan's midweek Champions League action.22:04

  30. 57'

KESSIE MAKES IT 2-0 FROM THE SPOT! The Ivory Coast midfielder takes his time with his run-up, stuttering on his way to the ball before sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and pocketing his penalty into the left corner of the goal!

    See Franck Kessié's player card22:04

    Franck Kessié
  31. 55'

PENALTY TO MILAN! It’s all happening now! Hernandez goes on a great slaloming run through midfield before playing a pass into the penalty area for Ibrahimovic. The forward latches onto the service but Ibanez barges through the man in order to get to the ball! The referee makes up his mind immediately and after a VAR review - the call stands!22:02

  32. 53'

Bennacer plays a lovely throughball in-between Roma’s defenders for Ibrahimovic, who forces Patricio into a great save. Again however the linesman raises his flag as he was unable to hold his run.22:00

  33. 51'

IBRAHIMOVIC SCORES BUT IT’S OFFSIDE! Kjaer’s route-one pass over the top for Ibrahimovic is met by a cushioned chest - before the striker dispatches a powerful volley into the bottom corner from 10 yards out. The Sweden international celebrates but after a VAR check it appears as though he was unable to keep onside to receive the delivery.21:58

  34. 49'

Mancini drags Leao back cynically - impeding the winger's progress forward. It's a yellow card for the Roma centre-back. 21:56

  35. 48'

Potential problems for Roma early in the second half as Abraham looks to be struggling with a hamstring or muscular issue. The former Chelsea striker is looking to run off the issue but he’s moving very gingerly.21:55

  36. 46'

Milan get the match restarted from the kick-off! 21:52

  37. 46'

    A change at half-time sees 18-year old Afena-Gyan replace Mkhitaryan.21:51

  38. One goal certainly won’t be enough for Milan, who will need some insurance if they are to feel secure about the three points. Giroud seems a likely introduction to replace the veteran Ibrahimovic who has already been booked, while Tonali could add some control to the midfield. Mourinho has no other option but to go for broke in pursuit of a goal that would take Roma to four points behind Inter in third, with Shomurodov, Perez and former Milan winger El Shaarawy the most positive choices on the bench.22:01

  39. An open and frenetic first half comes to a close at the Olimpico, with Milan in control of both the match and the score. Ibrahimovic’s low, driven free-kick after 25 minutes separates the two sides, though Roma have had more than their fair share of chances to open their account. Pellegrini really should have done better after just three minutes, when he sent his close-range laces shot just round the other side of the post while a number of dangerous counter-attacks have gone begging thanks to last-second interventions from Kjaer. With the end-to-end action likely to continue in the second period, more goals are likely despite the two teams’ impressive defensive records.21:38

  40. 45'+3'

    HALF-TIME: ROMA 0-1 MILAN. 21:35

  41. 45'+2'

Hernandez takes the free-kick with his stronger left foot, but a great diving stop from Patricio keeps the score at 1-0.21:50

  42. 45'+1'

Leao is brought down by Ibanez right on the edge of the penalty area in a central position. Can Ibrahimovic work his magic again?21:34

  43. 45'

The fourth official indicates one minute will be added to the end of the 90 for stoppages. 21:33

  44. 44'

Pellegrini takes a Roma corner to the near post where it’s attacked by Cristante - but the former Milan midfielder can only pop his backwards header up and over the target.21:32

  45. 43'

The free-kick is taken by Pellegrini and it rolls across the face of Tatarusanu's goal dangerously - though it manages to evade every Roma player inside the penalty area. Fortunately for the hosts it took a Milan touch on the way out - giving the hosts a corner.21:31

  46. 41'

Hernandez is booked for stepping across Zaniolo - bringing him down to the ground cynically.21:29

  47. 40'

Ibrahimovic has scored 11 goals against Roma in Serie A, a record for him in the top-flight: He has also scored more braces against the Giallorossi than against any other side.21:28

  48. 38'

LEAO SCORES BUT IT’S OFFSIDE! The Portugal international is played through into the penalty area by an Ibrahimovic chest pass, which prompts Patricio to come storming off his line. The winger executes a beautiful sombrero, popping it over the head of the goalkeeper before heading it into the empty net - but Ibrahimovic is deemed to have been offside in the build-up.21:27

  49. 36'

Ibanez is deemed to have been too eager to beat Ibrahimovic to an aerial ball - giving Milan yet another free-kick in Roma’s half. The hosts are looking a bit out of sorts at the minute as they struggle to keep calm heads.21:25

  50. 34'

Milan are given a free-kick after Calabria is brought to the ground by Mkhitaryan in front of the touchline - enraging Mourinho who thought a handball should be given against the right-back.21:22

  51. 32'

Not a bad way to score your 400th domestic goal for Ibrahimovic - who first netted on October 30, 1999; 22 years ago.21:19

  52. 30'

Bennacer has a sight at goal and fires a shot with his weaker right foot - sending the effort just over the crossbar from 20 yards out.21:17

  53. 28'

Pellegrini bundles Krunic to the ground with his shoulder - giving Milan a free-kick in midfield which the Rossoneri opt to play short. 21:16

  54. 27'

Ibrahimovic is booked immediately after the goal for excessive celebration.02:52

  55. 25'

IBRAHIMOVIC GIVES MILAN THE LEAD FROM THE SET-PIECE! UNBELIEVABLE! It’s an extremely well-taken free-kick as the Sweden international drives his effort low under the wall and puts it into the far corner of the goal! Patricio was rooted to the spot! 1-0!

    See Zlatan Ibrahimovic's player card21:14

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic
  56. 24'

Karsdorp is booked for a trip on Leao just outside the penalty area. The free-kick is in a good position for a strike on goal - with Ibrahimovic and Bennacer more than capable. 21:12

  57. 22'

Kjaer wins a free-kick off the ball after Abraham was too physical in his attempt to get into the penalty area for a cross. A good Roma move breaks down disappointingly.21:10

  58. 20'

Milan have won more Serie A matches against Roma than against any other side: in 172 matches between the two sides, the Rossoneri have won 76 times (D51 L45).21:08

  59. 18'

It’s been an open start to the match as both teams - who have lined up in identical formations - have really pushed for the breakthrough in the first 20 minutes. Roma have come closer to taking the lead but Milan’s intent press has caused the hosts problems.21:07

  60. 16'

Ibrahimovic gets on the end of a throughball sent by Krunic into the penalty area, but Mancini narrows the angle well and forces the striker to fire his shot over the crossbar.21:05

  61. 14'

PELLEGRINI SENDS IT WIDE! Unconvincing defending from Milan as Karsdorp is allowed to gallop into Milan’s half before pulling a low cross back to the penalty spot. Kjaer gets a touch to it before Calabria scrambles it out of the 18-yard box - but only as far as the Roma captain. The Italy international takes a whack at it but it fails to trouble Tatarusanu.21:03

  62. 13'

Milan’s first corner of the match is taken by Bennacer, but the Algeria international is unable to find a team-mate as Patricio claims the delivery under little pressure.21:01

  63. 11'

Calabria curls a lovely cross around the last defender for Leao, who gets ahead of Mancini but is unable to turn his effort towards goal - missing the target by some distance.20:58

  64. 9'

Saelemaekers’ low cross in from the right is met with a Krunic backheel inside the penalty area. Fortunately for the Roma defence, Ibrahimovic was too far behind the play - allowing Ibanez to clear comfortably.20:58

  65. 7'

Zaniolo is shown a yellow card seven minutes into the match for dissent after giving the linesman a piece of his mind following the awarding of a goal kick instead of a corner.06:03

  66. 7'

KESSIE GOES WIDE! Ibrahimovic waits for the run of Hernandez 20 yards from goal but instead plays a pass inside for Kessie, whose first-time effort misses the target narrowly.20:56

  67. 5'

Tomori misses a header on the halfway line which sends Abraham away on the counter-attack, but Pellegrini’s eventual cross to the edge of the penalty area is cut out by Kessie.20:53

  68. 3'

CLOSE! Vina gets free of Saelemaekers on the left after a lovely pass from Veretout puts the left-back in space. The Uruguay international cuts it back for Pellegrini, who scuffs his shot wide of the post from close range.20:51

  69. 1'

Roma get the match underway from the kick-off at the Olimpico!20:48

  70. Milan make four changes from the line-up that beat Torino 1-0 on Tuesday. Kjaer returns to the XI, sending Romagnoli to the bench, while Hernandez’s return to fitness sees him replace Kalulu at left-back. Bennacer is preferred over Tonali in midfield, with Giroud making way for Ibrahimovic.21:55

  71. Roma name an unchanged XI from the side that beat Cagliari 2-1 on Wednesday. Patricio starts between the posts behind a back four of Vina, Ibanez, Mancini and Karsdorp. Veretout and Cristante pair up in holding midfield while a trio of Mkhitaryan, Pellegrini and Zaniolo will look to supply Abraham.20:34

  72. MILAN SUBS: Pierre Kalulu, Olivier Giroud, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Brahim Diaz, Alessio Romagnoli, Andrea Conti, Antonio Mirante, Sandro Tonali, Daniel Maldini, Matteo Gabbia, Fode Ballo-Toure, Andreas Jungdal.20:30
