The dream lives on at San Siro - and Milan move top of Serie A with a sturdy comeback win against Verona! The hosts overturn a two-goal deficit thanks to Olivier Giroud's header, Franck Kessie's penalty and an own goal from Koray Gunter to take the spoils and break their visitors' hearts. Full-time, it finishes Milan 3-2 Verona.

Igor Tudor can take heart from that first half performance - but ultimately, his Verona side jut wilted at the inopportune moments after the break to see this one out.. There will be plenty to mull on the way home.

Stefano Pioli too will have his concerns however. His side have had to mount comebacks before, and two-goal margins are clearly no boundary to them - but if they hope to sustain their title challenge, they'll need to be wiser going forward.

  1. For Verona then, it is a week-long wait for action, with the test of Lazio next up for them - but Milan must turn their attentions to a more pressing trip to Porto in the Champions League before then. Until the next time, thank you for joining us - and have a good weekend!22:52

  2. 90'+5'

    FULL-TIME: MILAN 3-2 VERONA22:47

  3. 90'+4'

There's going to be a late free-kick for Verona however - but the defence is sturdy for Milan and that will be that!22:46

  4. 90'+2'

You feel for Igor Tudor, don't you? This one is almost up and his side are going to come away with nothing from a match they were out in front of for so long.22:44

  5. 90'

Tomori takes more treatment on the sidelines and Milan will play on with a man down for the moment. There will be four added minutes in this contest.22:41

  6. 88'

A concern for Milan here - Tomori is down injured, with medics clutching his knee. The England international looks rather forlorn and pained at the issue, whatever it is.22:38

  7. 86'

Here comes Ibrahimovic! It's a blocked shot from the Swede but it offers a quick reminder of the potent threat he has. It looks like it will not be needed in the end.22:38

  8. 84'

Milan have had almost twice as many shots as Verona in this one - but it has taken a penalty and an own goal to get them on top. Regardless of how this pans out, there will be strong words in the dressing room, you imagine.22:37

  9. 82'

Milan make another change - and the work of the hero who put them back on this path is done. Sandro Tonali replaces Olivier Giroud.22:35

  10. 81'

Ballo-Toure brings down Faraoni, moments after the latter spurns a chance, and now Milan are shown their first yellow card of the game.22:34

  11. 79'

It has all gone so wrong for Verona - but there is enough time to rescue something here. Matteo Cancellieri replaces Darko Lazovic as they look for that response.22:32

  12. 78'

GOAL! KORAY GUNTER PUTS THE BALL INTO HIS OWN NET AND MILAN LEAD! 3-2! It is a remarkable comeback for the hosts at San Siro! Verona's hearts have been broken in cruel fashion there - the agony of an own goal! Samu Castillejo flicks a cross in, the defender looks to move for it - and instead diverts it past his goalkeeper. Disaster for the visitors!

  13. 77'

Milan make another change to back up their equaliser - and it's the one San Siro wants to see. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is on, replacing Ismael Bennacer.22:28

  14. 76'

GOAL! FRANCK KESSIE CONVERTS FROM THE SPOT FOR MILAN! 2-2! Suddenly, we are all square! It is a lovely penalty, flashed into the left side of the net as Montipo goes the wrong way. We're headed for winner-takes-all territory!

    See Franck Kessié's player card22:26

    Franck Kessié
  15. 75'

The penalty stands! There can be no complaints on the basis of Verona's spot-kick in the first half there. Kessie will take.22:25

  16. 73'

But are they going to escape this one? VAR is now called into action after Faraoni apparently catches Castillejo with the pair lunging for the ball.22:24

  17. 71'

Is that a penalty to Milan? The referee - and more importantly, VAR - are not buying Giroud's claims that he has been grazed by a high boot. Verona escape - just.22:24

  18. 69'

End-to-end stuff! All of Milan's work is nearly undone when Verona break and pile forward - but then the hosts whip up a counter and tear down the other end, with Leao brushing the wrong side of the roof of the net.22:19

  19. 67'

Stefano Pioli is looking particularly animated and who can blame him? This has been much better from Milan but the job is far from done.22:19

  20. 65'

Giroud! Almost a double for the former Chelsea man now but his header this time arcs over the crossbar. Verona are starting to give the impression that they are holding on for dear life.22:17

  21. 64'

Verona makes another change now. Kevin Lasagna replaces Nikola Kalinic.22:15

  22. 62'

Further movement down on the Verona bench suggests they are not done when it comes to immediate changes too. Momentum has swung against them now for sure.22:15

  23. 60'

For the visitors' other swap, Giovanni Simeone replaces Gianluca Caprari.22:12

  24. 60'

Verona respond to that concession with a double change. Adrien Tameze replaces Miguel Veloso.22:12

  25. 59'

Leao has been a breath of air for this Milan attack and that period before the interval has really helped him bed into this game. His assisted - weighted perfectly - puts him on the path to being the unsung hero of this match.22:13

  26. 59'

GOAL! OLIVIER GIROUD PULLS ONE BACK FOR MILAN! 2-1! The hosts are on the scoreboard and it is thanks to the veteran Frenchman! He rises to meet Leao's cross, flicked in off the left, and thunders a cracker of a header home at the near post. Nicely done!

    See Olivier Giroud's player card22:12

    Olivier Giroud
  27. 58'

Almost disaster for Verona! Casale comes so close to turning the ball back into his own net after sticking an errant foot out to deal with a strike! It is a lucky escape.22:11

  28. 56'

Milan absolutely know they have to chase this game and they are duly putting all they've got into their attack now. A corner comes up and Verona hurry to bat it away.22:11

  29. 54'

Another foul, another yellow card. Veloso is the man to be handed a booking this time around. Verona will have to make sure they keep their noses clean.22:06

  30. 53'

Perched on the sidelines, Zlatan Ibrahimovic looks on pensively. Questions over his involvement with this match have lingered all week but Milan could definitely do with his Midas touch now.22:04

  31. 51'

A frenzied push from Milan almost cuts Verona open, but Krunic fails to get the angle on the connection of his ball and the visitors breathe easy.22:01

  32. 49'

Milan are undefeated in 29 Serie A home meetings with Verona (W16 D13): only against Inter and Juventus have they played more top-flight away matches without a single win in the competition (30 against each).22:02

  33. 47'

We've barely got back into the swing of this one and Verona have already launched a shot! Faraoni is the man responsible but it is comfortably wayward in the end.22:01

  34. 46'

We are back underway at San Siro for the second half of this Serie A clash. Can Milan mount a comeback or will Verona be able to command this lead all the way through?21:58

  35. 46'

There is also a swap for Verona, as Bosko Sutalo replaces Federico Ceccherini.21:57

  36. 46'

The hosts make their second swap, as Rade Krunic replaces Daniel Maldini.21:56

  37. 46'

Milan make the first of two changes at the break before the restart, as Samu Castillejo replaces Alexis Saelemaekers.21:56

  38. More shots, more ball, more passing accuracy and less yellow cards. Milan will rue that slow start and that spot-kick, won't they? They need three goals - at least - for a win.21:55

  39. Whoever writes the Serie A scripts, Verona didn't get the memo - they're two goals to the good against Milan at San Siro! There's plenty of work for the hosts to do in this one to get back into the swing of it - at half-time, it is Milan 0-2 Verona.21:41

  40. 45'+2'

    HALF-TIME: MILAN 0-2 VERONA21:38

  41. 45'

There's going to be two extra minutes in this one before the interval.21:37

  42. 43'

The hosts are pushing harder and faster than they arguably have throughout this contest now. Verona will have to watch their footing over the next few minutes.21:37

  43. 41'

Ballo-Toure! His left-footed effort from outside the box sails wide and high. Milan's set-piece situation comes to nothing in the end.21:37

  44. 40'

Milan grab their first corner of the game as they look to exert a spell of pressure here. With the break fast around the corner, they could do with something.21:37

  45. 38'

Casale becomes the latest Verona man to get booked and this one is a particularly sharp challenge on Leao too. It gets him into the game early.21:33

  46. 36'

Ante Rebic has been carrying a niggle since that early challenge - and he unfortunately must make way now. Rafael Leao is his replacement.21:31

  47. 35'

Ballo-Toure lunges in on Barak and the latter picks up a free-kick, though the former avoids the trouble of a card this time.21:29

  48. 33'

Milan dart forward again and Montipo - increasingly finding a place in this match - slips to the edge of his box to deal with the danger.21:25

  49. 31'

Besides being the side to have scored the most goals in the opening 15 minutes of play in Serie A this season (five), Verona are one of the three teams (alongside Juventus and Fiorentina) that are yet to concede a goal during this period.21:22

  50. 29'

Saelemaekers penned new terms at San Siro only the other day - and he promptly looks to celebrate it with a goal. Montipo makes a clean save - but an impressive one nonetheless. That would have been a fine strike from outside the box had it nestled in the net.21:22

  51. 27'

Calabria latches onto a throughball and carves a wonderful path through the middle to give Milan a shot of momentum - but his finish is somewhere into orbit, blasted well into the stands behind.21:19

  52. 25'

The only thing that can match Verona's haul of goals? Their haul of yellow cards. Kalinic now gets booked for a reckless high challenge in mid-air.21:17

  53. 24'

GOAL! ANTONIN BARAK CONVERTS THE PENALTY FOR VERONA! 2-0! This is turning into a superb half for the visitors. Tatarusanu reads the finish well, diving left towards the right post - but the shot is placed just out of reach, nestled into the bottom corner superbly.

  54. 23'

The check is over - and there is no need to go to the screen, the penalty stands! Milan could be two down inside the first half-hour here...21:16

  55. 21'

Have Verona nabbed a penalty here? VAR is going to have a look after a square ball comes in towards Kalinic and Romagnoli gets into a tangle with him. Milan are fuming that it is even being referred to.21:14

  56. 19'

Cool heads appear to be prevailing for the Rossoneri right now - but Verona are still causing them all kinds of issues around midfield. This is an assured performance from the visitors.21:13

  57. 17'

Now Milan deliver a much stronger passage in attack to launch some pressure on the visitors' box. Giroud can't reach a cross flipped over from out wide however, while Kessie's lead-in play lingers a little too long.21:09

  58. 15'

Lazovic cuts a path down the left edge and then sees his square ball just smuggled wide of the near post amid a mass of bodies. Officials deem it to be a goal-kick, but Verona are still putting the moves on so far.21:07

  59. 13'

No side has scored more goals from outside the box than Verona in Serie A this season (three), whilst Milan haven’t conceded any such goals in the competition this campaign.21:07

  60. 11'

The visitors look to come again down the left flank, and play an inventive passage against their hosts. Milan smother it away but they still look a bit rattled.21:03

  61. 9'

San Siro doesn't fall quiet like this that often, it is fair to say. Verona though have started the livelier of the two sides here and are good value for their lead.21:02

  62. 7'

There is a touch of right place, right time for Veloso to nab that assist there, but credit him for the fastest reaction. Milan look poleaxed by that one!21:00

  63. 7'

GOAL! GIANLUCA CAPRARI PUTS VERONA IN FRONT! 1-0! Milan will fume at their defensive failures there, failing to clear their lines cleanly, but the visitors make the most immediately. Veloso heads the ball forward and his team-mate is there to lash a wonderful volley home. Superb stuff!

  64. 5'

Ceccherini comes in on Rebic - quite heavily for the opening act of the match - and the result is an early yellow card. He'll have to watch himself from here on out.20:58

  65. 3'

Almost first blood to the visitors! Though Milan claim for a handball in the buildup, Ilic manages to squeeze a low shot off which Tatarusanu bats away unconvincingly.20:55

  66. 1'

We are underway in this Serie A clash between Milan and Verona!20:52

  67. The teams have emerged at San Siro and we are moments away from kick-off. Today's match referee is Alessandro Prontera.20:44

  68. Verona have failed to win each of their last seven Serie A away matches (D3 L4), drawing their last two: they last drew three such matches in a row in February 2020 (one of them against Milan).20:34

  69. Having lost two successive league matches against Verona between 2016 and 2017, Milan have gone unbeaten in the following five against them (W3 D2).20:27

  70. Subs: Ivor Pandur, Kevin Ruegg, Bosko Sutalo, Kevin Lasagna, Yildirim Mert Cetin, Alessandro Berardi, Daniel Bessa, Matteo Cancellieri, Giangiacomo Magnani, Martin Hongla, Adrien Tameze, Giovanni Simeone.20:22

  71. HELLAS VERONA (3-4-3): Lorenzo Montipo; Federico Ceccherini, Koray Gunter, Nicolo Casale; Marco Faraoni, Ivan Ilic, Miguel Veloso, Darko Lazovic; Antonin Barak, Nikola Kalinic, Gianluca Caprari.20:21

  72. Subs: Sandro Tonali, Andrea Conti, Andreas Jungdal, Pietro Pellegri, Rade Krunic, Rafael Leao, Simon Kjaer, Matteo Gabbia, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Pierre Kalulu Kyatengwa, Samu Castillejo.20:21

  73. MILAN (4-2-3-1): Ciprian Tatarusanu; Davide Calabria, Alessio Romagnoli, Fikayo Tomori, Fode Ballo-Toure; Ismael Bennacer, Franck Kessie; Alexis Saelemaekers, Daniel Maldini, Ante Rebic; Olivier Giroud.20:21

  74. The biggest team news today of course is the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic - but in what is a boost for Verona, the Sweden star does not start. Instead, he makes the bench, with Olivier Giroud leading the line for the hosts.20:21

  75. Victory on home turf therefore is expected, but they may well face a sterner test than expected in the shape of Igor Tudor's visitors. Verona have gone unbeaten across their last four league games - and they'll be determined to make it five in a row.20:18

  76. With the October international break now in the rearview mirror, clubs can return their concerns to the Scudetto - and in a tight race near the summit, Stefano Pioli will know that dropped points even at this early stage could prove fatal to his side's ambitions.20:15
