A thoroughly entertaining affair at the Gewiss comes to a close as Atalanta squeak out a narrow 1-0 victory, and jump Juventus in the table as a result. Some crafty substitutions late on from Gasperini made the difference as Ilicic combined with Malinovskiy to put the hosts ahead with just three minutes remaining in the contest. Malinovskiy’s long-range deflected strike was the only difference as both teams threw caution to the wind in order to snatch an all-important victory, with a 1-0 scoreline not an accurate representation of the chances available. Pirlo’s case was hampered by the 58th minute injury to Chiesa, however, his team-mate on that wing Cuadrado had an absolutely spectacular day despite the defeat. As things stand, Atalanta take third place with a two-point gap over Juventus in fourth. The Bianconeri are three points ahead of Napoli in fifth, though the Partenopei have a match to play.

Atalanta are in action again on Thursday, when they travel to face Roma. Juventus take to the pitch in midweek when they host Parma.

That concludes our coverage of the Serie A commentary between Atalanta and Juventus! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!

  1. 90'+4'

    FULL-TIME: ATALANTA 1-0 JUVENTUS. 16:51

  2. 90'+3'

Cuadrado is shown a yellow card for getting into a frustrated tussle with Freuler. It’s nothing more than desperation from the wing-back, who has played very well today despite his side being in a losing position.16:51

  3. 90'+1'

CLOSE! Cuadrado stands over a free-kick just outside the Atalanta penalty area on the right, looking to swing the ball into the middle and bring his side level. It’s crossed with accuracy, but Palomino gets there first to win the ball and knock it out of his 18-yard box.16:50

  4. 89'

The fourth official indicates three minutes will be added for stoppages. 16:49

  5. 87'

Two substitutes link up for the goal as Ilicic is credited with the assist after his pass found Malinovskiy in space. 16:48

  6. 87'

IS THAT THE WINNER FROM MALINOVSKIY?! ATALANTA TAKE THE LEAD! 1-0! A quick corner is taken to Malinovskiy, who cuts inside and absolutely leathers a strike from outside the penalty area. The shot takes a deflection off of Alex Sandro and wrongfoots Szczesny, who had no chance after the deviation!

    Ruslan Malinovskiy
  7. 86'

WHAT A SAVE FROM SZCZESNY! Atalanta’s free-kick from well outside the Juventus penalty area is struck with power by Malinovskiy, who slipped during his attempt to side-foot the ball into the top corner. Szczesny moves across his line with agility and leaps across to parry the effort - pushing it behind for a corner!16:48

  8. 84'

Atalanta's Malinovskyi has provided five assists in his last three Serie A appearances; only Filip Kostic (10), Toni Kroos (7) and Aleksandr Golovin (7) have provided more assists than the Ukrainian player (6) among the midfielders in the top-5 European leagues in 2021 (this calendar year).16:43

  9. 82'

Djimsiti is booked for a very bad tackle on Cuadrado, with the defender grabbing his opponent's jersey and catching him with a raised leg. 16:58

  10. 81'

Juventus put the ball out of play for De Ligt, who is in some pain after getting caught by Zapata. It’s unintentional from the Atalanta striker, who walked backwards into the centre-back's shin with his studs. It’s a painful one, but the Netherlands international should be able to continue.16:58

  11. 79'

Malinovskiy catches Alex Sandro very late and brings him down in midfield, earning the Atalanta substitute a yellow card.16:40

  12. 78'

Gosens is shown a yellow card for a foul on Cuadrado during a Juventus attacking build-up. 16:41

  13. 77'

Arthur is in for McKennie as Pirlo shakes up his midfield. 16:35

  14. 76'

Cuadrado looks to take a Juventus corner to the far post, but he hits his delivery with too much power - sending it over the head of the centre-back and out for a goal-kick. 16:34

  15. 74'

Bonucci is shown a yellow card from the bench for dissent, as he’s been a little too vocal with his criticisms of the match official.16:32

  16. 72'

Malinovskiy replaces Maehle with 18 minutes remaining as Atalanta look to take the lead.16:31

  17. 70'

ZAPATA SENDS IT WIDE! Ilicic wins a header on the right wing over McKennie and immediately fires a cross to the far post for a diving Zapata, who is unable to turn his header towards goal - putting it the wrong side of the post narrowly!16:28

  18. 68'

Atalanta counter with an attacking switch of their own, as Muriel is withdrawn for Ilicic.16:28

  19. 68'

Pirlo makes a change in attack, looking to spark his side into life with just over 20 minutes remaining. Kulusevski is on for Dybala.16:28

  20. 67'

Rabiot looks to play Dybala through the Atalanta defence with a lovely throughball hit with the outside of his foot, but the former PSG midfielder overhits his delivery as it rolls right into the arms of Gollini.16:24

  21. 65'

Cuadrado and Dybala stand over it, but it’s the latter who curls it towards the far corner with the in-step of his right foot. It’s a dangerous effort, but Gollini manages his space well and lets it fly behind for a goal-kick.16:21

  22. 63'

Cuadrado drives towards goal and gets tripped up by the outstretched leg of Djimsiti. It’s a free-kick for Juventus in a dangerous area - can they make it count?16:20

  23. 61'

Atalanta waste a free-kick just outside the Juventus penalty area on the left, after Muriel’s delivery hits the first man squarely on top of the head - clearing it immediately.16:19

  24. 59'

CLOSE! Muriel receives the ball on the edge of the penalty area and hits a wicked curling effort to the far post, missing the target by inches! The goalkeeper can count himself fortunate as he collects the ball for a goal-kick, as he had no chance to get there should the shot have hit the target.16:18

  25. 58'

Confirmation of the change as Pirlo doesn't take any risks with one of his best players this season. Danilo is sent on as Chiesa's replacement, with Cuadrado likely to push ahead into midfield. 16:16

  26. 57'

Play is stopped momentarily for Chiesa, who is down holding the back of his leg. The influential Juventus winger is grimacing, and it looks as though a substitution will be made immediately.16:15

  27. 56'

The ball is lumped forward by Toloi on the right flank just inside his own half towards the Juventus penalty area for Zapata. The ball is hit with great accuracy but a lack of pace makes for a difficult header for the Atalanta striker.16:15

  28. 54'

Chiellini goes on a rare foray forward and finds lots of room to run before Pasalic closes down the space and scythes down the centre-back just outside Atalanta’s area. The referee - who has let a lot go today - sees nothing wrong with the challenge as the substitute did make contact with the ball at some point, much to Chiellini’s confusion.16:13

  29. 52'

The last two goals Juventus have conceded in Serie A have come between the 46th and the 60th minute of play, while Atalanta have scored the most league goals during period (14 goals).16:10

  30. 50'

Atalanta are enjoying a lengthy spell in possession, looking to poke at Juve from different angles in search of potential weakness. The attack eventually comes through Zapata on the right-hand side, but his low, centring pass is cut out by Chiellini.16:09

  31. 48'

Gasperini looks to change things in attack at the half bringing on Pasalic, who played the full 90 minutes last weekend against Fiorentina. Pessina didn’t influence the match too much in the first half, though he was responsible for his side’s best chance; one ultimately not taken.16:05

  32. 46'

Atalanta get the match restarted from the kick-off! 16:03

  33. 46'

A change at the half for Atalanta sees Pasalic replace Pessina. 16:03

  34. With quality on both benches, there’s no reason to think the scoreless draw will continue well into the second half. Both Gasperini and Pirlo have options to alter their play should they want to pursue the lead, with Ilicic and Lammers ready and willing to enter the fray for the hosts. As for Juventus, their forwards have linked up well, though the option of a left foot in Kulusevski or Arthur’s distribution could ask questions of the Atalanta defence late.15:50

  35. It’s been an even and entertaining contest at the Gewiss Stadium, with both teams entering the half-time interval level at 0-0 despite chances for either side to break the deadlock. Pessina really should have given the hosts the lead after 24 minutes, but one too many touches allowed De Ligt to storm through and make a decisive block. At the other end, Morata’s empty net strike really could have put Juve ahead, had it not been for Djimsiti’s well-timed goal line intervention. Separated by just one point in the table, there’s been nothing to put distance between the two sides in the first 45 minutes.15:47

  36. 45'+1'

    HALF-TIME: ATALANTA 0-0 JUVENTUS. 15:47

  37. 45'

It’s Cuadrado who takes the free-kick with a flat delivery, but De Ligt scoops his effort up and over the crossbar.15:47

  38. 44'

Dybala goes down holding his back after a heavy challenge from De Roon just outside the penalty area. The Juve striker seems to be okay after needing a minute, as Juve are given a free-kick in a dangerous area.15:46

  39. 42'

With under five minutes to play in the first half, it doesn't look as though there will be a breakthrough, though it's not for a lack of trying. It's been a really entertaining opening frame, with both sides desperate for the advantage. 15:43

  40. 40'

Juventus have scored at least two goals in each of their last seven away games against Atalanta in Serie A, winning four and drawing three (each with a 2-2 scoreline).15:41

  41. 38'

McKennie breaks into the penalty area after a lovely pass from Dybala, but his narrow-angle shot is closed down by Gosens, who seems to have injured himself in the process. He’ll need to go off to be looked at, though he should be able to continue.15:40

  42. 36'

Cuadrado takes the free-kick himself, but he puts it directly into the hands of a grateful Gollini.15:38

  43. 35'

Cuadrado is brought down just outside the penalty area, giving Juventus a chance to strike at goal from the ensuing free-kick.15:37

  44. 34'

DJIMSITI CLEARS IT OFF THE LINE! Maehle gets caught in possession just inside his own six-yard box by Chiesa, after the wing-back fails to clear the danger with a header. The Juventus winger lays the ball off to Morata, who strikes it at an open goal after Gollini had been dragged out of the play. Destined for the far post - Djimsiti hustles back and clears it in the nick of time! 15:37

  45. 33'

It’s been a very scrappy last five minutes, with both sides putting in challenges to break up the play. The latest instance sees Morata called for a foul on Freuler in midfield, which sees the hosts regain possession via a free-kick.15:34

  46. 31'

The second corner is taken to the edge of the six-yard box, but it manages to glide through the bodies and roll out of the penalty area on the other side for Atalanta to clear. 15:31

  47. 30'

Dybala’s corner for De Ligt is nodded away by a defender but only as far as Chiellini, whose quickfire strike is deflected behind for a second set-piece.15:30

  48. 28'

It’s been a wet and windy opening half hour in Bergamo, but the spectacle hasn’t been affected as both sides have been direct in their search for the opening goal. The hosts have come slightly closer, though the visitors have looked the better side overall.15:30

  49. 26'

Juventus look to respond after Atalanta’s latest attack, but Cuadrado’s cross into the penalty area for Morata is headed away at the first opportunity by a well-placed Palomino.15:27

  50. 24'

PESSINA REALLY SHOULD HAVE SCORED! A fantastic give and go between Muriel and Pessina gets the latter through into Juve’s penalty area, but the attacking midfielder takes one touch too many before blasting his shot - which takes the slightest of deflections off of De Ligt before going behind.15:25

  51. 22'

Alex Sandro gets caught too far up the pitch after a Juventus attack breaks down and the left-back is forced to bring down Muriel in order to prevent a counter-attack. The cynical foul is right in front of the referee, but it’s just a free-kick and nothing more.15:23

  52. 20'

Juventus have won only one of their last six games against Atalanta across all competitions, in November 2019 at Bergamo (D4 L1).15:21

  53. 18'

Zapata shows his determination, chasing down three different Juventus players in possession before stripping Rabiot of the ball and charging into Juve’s half. He’s eventually forced wide and wins a throw-in after pressure from De Ligt, allowing his side to move higher up the pitch.15:19

  54. 16'

CLOSE! Chiesa fires an effort from well outside the penalty area after receiving Cuadrado’s square pass, but his shot goes just wide of the goal.15:17

  55. 14'

Cuadrado cuts inside and drives towards the penalty area, laying it off to Dybala before continuing his run and receiving a return pass over the top of the defence, meeting it with a lovely touch. The ensuing volley towards goal from a tight angle is venomous, but two Atalanta defenders slide across to block the strike.15:15

  56. 12'

Muriel looks to build up around the penalty area but Zapata is unable to receive the ball to hold it up as Juventus get a chance to smuggle it away from their 18-yard box.15:13

  57. 10'

Rabiot and Zapata duel for the loose ball in midfield, but the Juventus midfielder gets a little too physical, pushing over the striker and giving Atalanta a free-kick in the middle of the pitch.15:11

  58. 8'

Cuadrado takes the latest Juve corner, but it comes to nothing as De Roon is there to meet it at the near post, heading away the danger comfortably. 15:08

  59. 6'

Dybala floats a corner to the far post for De Ligt, but the centre-back fouls Djimsiti in the build-up and gets called for the infringement. Atalanta get a chance to clear their lines from a free-kick. 15:07

  60. 4'

An early decision goes the way of Juventus as referee Daniele Orsato fails to point to the penalty spot after Muriel was pushed over in the penalty area by Cuadrado - who had no chance to play the ball. It certainly wasn't an obvious error, but we have seen them given. 15:06

  61. 3'

Juventus have started the brighter of the two sides, looking to get forward down the flanks via Cuadrado. Morata failed to keep the ball after a lovely interchange inside the penalty area, but it’s early warning signs for the Atalanta defence.15:04

  62. 1'

Juventus get the match underway from the kick-off! 15:00

  63. Juventus make three alterations of their own from last week’s 3-1 victory over Genoa. Alex Sandro returns to left-back replacing Danilo, while Kulusevski is dropped for McKennie on the right wing. The final alteration is enforced, as an injury to Cristiano Ronaldo sees Dybala partner Morata in attack.14:50

  64. Atalanta make three changes from their 3-2 win over Fiorentina seven days ago. Cristian Romero is suspended, allowing Djimsiti to start in defence, while Maehle and Pessina get into midfield ahead of Pasalic and Malinovskiy.14:50

  65. JUVENTUS SUBS: Leonardo Bonucci, Danilo, Aaron Ramsey, Felix Correia, Arthur, Merih Demiral, Dejan Kulusevski, Gianluigi Buffon, Carlo Pinsoglio, Gianluca Frabotta.14:44

  66. JUVENTUS XI (4-4-2): Wojciech Szczesny; Juan Cuadrado, Matthijs De Ligt, Giorgio Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Weston McKennie, Rodrigo Bentancur, Adrien Rabiot, Federico Chiesa; Paulo Dybala, Alvaro Morata.14:44

  67. ATALANTA SUBS: Bosko Sutalo, Matteo Ruggeri, Francesco Rossi, Sam Lammers, Josip Ilicic, Mattia Caldara, Aleksey Miranchuk, Ruslan Malinovskiy, Viktor Kovalenko, Marco Sportiello, Mario Pasalic.14:44

  68. ATALANTA XI (3-4-1-2): Pierluigi Gollini; Jose Luis Palomino, Berat Djimsiti, Rafael Toloi; Robin Gosens, Remo Freuler, Marten De Roon, Joakim Maehle; Matteo Pessina; Luis Muriel, Duvan Zapata.14:44

  69. With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up today - starting with our hosts!14:44

  70. It’s a case of attack against defence today, as Gasperini’s Atalanta have scored more times than anyone else in Italy (71 in 30 games), while Juventus have the joint-best defence with table-toppers Inter, conceding just 27 in 30. Even their recent form has nothing to separate the two sides, with each side claiming victory once in their last five matches - the other three ending in draws.14:34

  71. Fourth place Atalanta welcome Juventus, who currently sit third - to the Gewiss Stadium ahead of an extremely important match at the top-end of the Serie A table. With Napoli just three points back of the Bianconeri and two behind the hosts, it’s certainly possible that a loss today could leave either Andrea Pirlo or Gian Piero Gasperini’s club on the outside of Champions League qualification looking in with seven games remaining.14:30
