Well, what a game of football that was! Goals, controversy, and cards aplenty, as Milan produced a dominant performance to put Roma to the sword and move within a point of arch-rivals Inter! Roma's ill-discipline really cost them in the second half, going down to nine men and being unable to stop the hosts adding a third through Leao, and Jose Mourinho will be furious with his side's showing today. But, regardless of their performance, it's hard to say that Milan weren't thoroughly the better side in this match.

Olivier Giroud led the line with aplomb for the hosts in this game, scoring the opener and playing a crucial role in his side's second. He also completed another two shots, as well as a key pass, and provided an attacking outlet for a Milan side who were red-hot going forward in this match.

As mentioned, that win puts Milan right on the coat-tails of Inter, whose scheduled match today was postponed. With performances like that, Stefano Pioli will be confident his side can overtake their city rivals and top the table come May this year, and the Rossoneri couldn't have hoped for a better start to their 2022. Roma drop a place to seventh, having missed the chance to overtake Juventus, and their eighth loss in just 20 games so far will be ringing alarm bells for Jose Mourinho and his staff.

  1. That's all from us, we hope you enjoyed the game. We'll see you for the next one, goodbye!20:45

  2. 90'+5'

    FULL-TIME: MILAN 3-1 ROMA.20:33

  3. 90'+4'

It was a good save from a rather poor penalty, by Ibrahimovic's standards, and Patricio also keeps out a cross from Maldini to keep the hosts out again!20:33

  4. 90'+4'

Ibrahimovic steps up, but his low penalty is saved well by Patricio! Roma's keeper spares his side's blushes!20:32

  5. 90'+3'

Mancini is also sent for an early bath after the referee brandishes a straight red card, and he flings the captain's armband at Cristante in frustration as Roma go down to NINE players!01:23

  6. 90'+3'

PENALTY!!! Leao gets around the outside of Mancini as he sprints into the box, and the Roma defender brings him down for a stonewall penalty!20:30

  7. 90'+2'

Roma have a free-kick from 30 yards out, but Mkhitaryan's effort, which is difficult to deem a cross or shot, sails high over the bar and behind.20:28

  8. 90'+1'

OFF THE LINE!!! Ibrahimovic is put into space deep inside the box from a Leao pass, but rather than shooting looks to cross for Maldini, and the pass across goal is cleared away by Mancini!20:27

  9. 90'

We'll play four extra minutes of added time at the end of this second half.20:27

  10. 88'

Diaz is the next Rossoneri player substituted, and on comes Daniel Maldini.20:23

  11. 86'

Leao touches down a lofted diagonal pass and looks to engineer a crossing opportunity, but he's shunted to the ground by Mancini who is lucky to avoid a booking.20:23

  12. 85'

Carles Perez is the next Roma substitute to be introduced, on for Zaniolo.20:22

  13. 84'

Cristante is screaming in the face of the referee following that play-on decision, and he's yellow carded for dissent.01:23

  14. 84'

BLOCKED!!! There's a bouncing ball from a Roma corner, and Cristante sees a volley blocked, before Ibanez goes down under pressure and the Roma players erupt!20:21

  15. 81'

GOOOAAALLLL!!!! Ibrahimovic chests the ball to Leao, who bursts through the defence and fires beyond Patricio to make it 3-1 to Milan! What a run and finish, and Milan look to have wrapped up the three points here!

    See Rafael Leão's player card23:08

    Rafael Leão
  16. 81'

That chest on by Ibrahimovic was just perfect for Leao to rate away from the trailing defenders, and even at 40 years of age, he is still such a key facet in this Milan side.23:08

  17. 80'

Ibrahimovic has scored 11 goals against Roma in Serie A, a joint-record for him in the competition. He has netted more braces against the Giallorossi than against any other side in the Italian top-flight with four, three of which have come during his two spells at Milan.20:15

  18. 78'

Florenzi is also withdrawn after a great performance against his former club, and Andrea Conti will replace him.20:14

  19. 77'

Opening scorer Giroud comes off for Milan, and is replaced by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.20:14

  20. 77'

Diaz looks to jink in-between Smalling and Mkhitaryan, and the latter brings him down to concede the free-kick 35 yards from goal.20:13

  21. 76'

Roma's goalscorer Abraham comes off to be replaced by Eldor Shomurodov.20:12

  22. 75'

OFF THE BAR!!! Florenzi strikes the free-kick from the left, and his curling effort rattles the frame of the goal and bounces back out!! What a strike that was!20:12

  23. 74'

RED CARD!!! Hernandez gets around the outside of Karsdorp, who brings him down just outside the box. A penalty is avoided, just, but the visitors are down to 10 men after the referee books Karsdorp again for that challenge and gives him his marching orders!20:11

  24. 73'

Leao looks to cut inside Karsdorp, but the Roma right-back checks his run and wins possession before clearing his lines.20:09

  25. 71'

The third of Roma's subs sees Pellegrini come off for Stephan El Shaarawy.20:07

  26. 71'

Veretout is also withdrawn, and youngster Felix Afena-Gyan comes on for the Giallorossi.20:07

  27. 71'

Vina is brought off by Jose Mourinho, and on comes Bryan Cristante for Roma.20:06

  28. 70'

Karsdorp and Hernandez come together again, as the Roma wing-back shunts over the Milan captain near the corner flag, with a free-kick given in the home side's favour.20:55

  29. 68'

OVER!!! Messias takes on Vina and cuts inside, before unleashing a powerful shot that flies just over the top of the crossbar!20:04

  30. 67'

WIDE!!! Giroud's cross from the left finds Diaz unmarked. He touches the ball down, but his curling effort can't quite find the inside of the post and flies over and behind Patricio's goal!20:04

  31. 66'

Kalulu has been at the height of all the defensive action for Milan so far, completing three tackles and clearances respectively, making a block, and winning possession seven times, as well as making more attempted passes than any other Milan player.20:03

  32. 64'

Saelemaekers is also brought off by Stefano Pioli, and Rafael Leao makes his long-anticipated return for the home side.20:53

  33. 64'

The booked Krunic is withdrawn for Milan, and on comes Tiemoue Bakayoko.20:00

  34. 62'

SAVED!!! A Roma corner deflects out to Mkhitaryan, whose low shots draws a save from Maignan, before Ibanez follows up and is again denied by the diving Milan keeper! A fantastic double save, and Ibanez's offside position means that Milan will keep the ball!20:00

  35. 61'

A Karsdorp cross is deflected into Pellegrini's path, and the captain's half-volleyed shot on goal is deflected behind for a corner by Krunic.19:56

  36. 59'

SAVED!!! Mkhitaryan tees up Abraham, who turns and fires a low shot towards the far corner! Maignan gets down low and needs a fingertip save to keep it out! What a stop.19:55

  37. 58'

Tonali looks to put Hernandez into space, but the ball takes a deflection off the referee! Roma look to break after the ball lands at Zaniolo's feet, but the referee brings play back after his error!19:55

  38. 56'

Pellegrini strides over halfway for Roma on the break, before he's cynically scythed down by Krunic. The Milan midfielder is rightfully booked, as the Roma captain finally gets to his feet.19:53

  39. 55'

It's been a mixed performance from Zaniolo so far. The Roma striker has two shots, with one on target, as well as two key passes, but has also been caught offside twice, and has conceded four fouls as well as losing the ball 16 times already.19:52

  40. 53'

Saelemaekers dribbles into the box on the left, and looks to beat Veretout and cross. He's unsuccessful, but still wins a corner after the ball takes a deflection off the Roma midfielder.19:49

  41. 51'

OFF THE BAR!!! Diaz does excellently to ride a couple of challenges, before unleashing a curling effort that smashes off the crossbar! What a goal that would've been!19:47

  42. 50'

CHANCE!!! Messias is in space down the right and cuts back for Giroud. A deflection takes the ball into the path of Krunic, but the midfielder chooses not to shoot and is dispossessed! What a chance that was for Milan!20:53

  43. 49'

Pellegrini looks to find Zaniolo on a continuing run, but put comes Maignan to smother the ball and quash the chance.20:52

  44. 48'

Ibanez bundles Giroud to the ground as the Milan striker looks to control the ball, and concedes the free-kick, avoiding a card once more.19:45

  45. 46'

Messias is racing onto a long pass from deep and looks to collect the ball on the edge of the box, but Patricio races out of his goal to head the ball away from danger.19:43

  46. 46'

And we're back underway for the second half as Milan resume proceedings!19:41

  47. The teams are heading back out for the second half, and it's shaping up to be one hell of a contest in the second 45 minutes!19:39

  48. Messias has had a very busy first half for the home side. His goal is the difference at the moment, and he's also had two other shots, as well as a cross, and despite winning all of his duels in the air, he's lost the ball on the ground a team-high nine times.19:32

  49. What a half of football! A game that started with Milan firmly on top, and two goals to the good through Giroud and Messias, soon became much tighter as Abraham pulled one back for Roma and temperatures started to rise! There were cards and scuffles aplenty towards the end of the first 45, and so the second half looks set to be a cracker!19:28

  50. 45'+5'

    HALF-TIME: MILAN 2-1 ROMA.19:24

  51. 45'+4'

PENALTY??? Zaniolo turns Gabbia brilliantly and races into the area. He goes down under pressure from Tonali and screams for a penalty, but the referee isn't budged as he waves away the protests!19:23

  52. 45'+3'

RED!!! A second yellow, and then a red card, is brandished by the referee, aimed towards a member of Milan's backroom staff who has been objecting to the ref's performance so far!19:22

  53. 45'+1'

The players are all in a huddle between teams once more, and the referee needs to ensure he keeps control over this game.19:20

  54. 45'

We're into five minutes of added time, as this first half becomes quite a scrappy affair.19:20

  55. 44'

    Yellow Card Lorenzo Pellegrini13:24

  56. 44'

Karsdorp isn't a happy man either, and he's also shown a yellow card.19:19

  57. 44'

The Milan captain Hernandez is booked for his part in the scuffle, and isn't happy with the referee's action there.19:19

  58. 43'

With Krunic down injured in the Roma box, Hernandez looks to put the ball out of play, sparking a touchline tussle between himself and Karsdorp which quickly spills over.19:18

  59. 41'

Tonali looks to bring the ball forward for Milan, before being pulled to the floor by Abraham, who concedes the free-kick.19:17

  60. 40'

It looked to be Pellegrini's goal initially, but the Roma captain's shot will go down as an assist instead, as Abraham's cheeky touch wrong-footed Maignan to send the ball into the net.19:16

  61. 40'

GOOOAAAALLLL!!!! Roma have pulled one back!!! The corner is headed away as far as Pellegrini, who shoots at goal. Abraham gets the crucial last touch, taking it beyond Maignan and into the back of the net! 2-1, and game on!

    See Tammy Abraham's player card19:15

    Tammy Abraham
  62. 40'

Zaniolo is found on the edge of the box, and looks to curl one into the far corner. Abraham gets a nick on the ball as it travels, but Maignan produces a fantastic reflex save to keep the ball out! What a stop from the Milan keeper!19:14

  63. 38'

Vina catches Messias quite late on the left-hand touchline, but also avoids a booking from the referee.19:12

  64. 37'

Roma have scored 94 away goals against AC Milan in Serie A, despite having won only 19, and losing 47, of their previous 86 matches in Lombardy. Only against capital rivals Lazio have they scored more away goals (95) in the top-flight.19:10

  65. 36'

Ibanez sends Tonali flying with a late, late challenge, and appears to be lucky to have avoided a booking there.19:12

  66. 35'

Zaniolo sets off after being put into space by Veretout. He tees up Abraham on the edge of the area but the England striker is crowded out by Milan defenders and loses possession.19:08

  67. 34'

Veretout is down on the floor after a clash with Diaz, and the Roma midfielder is receiving treatment.19:07

  68. 32'

Zaniolo wins a footrace with Saelemaekers to latch onto a loose ball, but the Roma forward came back from an offside position and so is penalised.19:06

  69. 30'

Milan build momentum deep in Roma's half and the ball comes to Hernandez. The Rossoneri captain looks to shoot once more, but this effort flies wide and smacks the stanchion behind the goal on its way.19:04

  70. 29'

WIDE! Florenzi races down the right and his cross is deflected into the path of Messias. He instinctively shoots on the half-volley, but his shot trails just wide of Patricio's goal!19:03

  71. 28'

In 2021, AC Milan won 27 Serie A matches – only their 28 victories in 1950 had seen the Rossoneri win more league games in a single calendar year.19:05

  72. 26'

BLOCKED!!! Diaz wins possession well and feeds Giroud. He looks to find Messias but gets the ball back, and his shot towards the far corner is blocked away by Smalling!19:00

  73. 24'

SAVED!!! Abraham beats Kalulu to the ball and feeds Zaniolo, who drives into the box before shooting at the near post. It's a good first effort, but Maignan is equal to it and puts the ball behind for a corner!18:58

  74. 22'

Roma's back-three, particularly Ibanez who gave away that poor back-pass, are looking really shaky at the moment, and are being hurried to oblivion by this high-octane Milan press.18:56

  75. 20'

AC Milan have won more Serie A matches against Roma than against any other side – 77 from 173 attempts - and are in the driving seat as they look to make this number 78.18:53

  76. 18'

A Roma corner routine breaks down and Milan shoot forward. Zaniolo sticks out a leg to stop the run of Messias, and is given a yellow card as a result.20:31

  77. 17'

GOOOAAAALLLLL!!!! Milan have two!!! A horrible backpass puts Giroud through on goal with Patricio, but the striker hits the post before Messias follows in to fire the ball into the far corner to make it 2-0 to the hosts!

    See Junior Messias's player card18:50

    Junior Messias
  78. 15'

Saelemaekers' cross is headed away by Mancini into the path of Florenzi, who fires a dipping volley from the edge of the box that lands straight in the arms of Patricio.18:49

  79. 14'

Mkhitaryan is put into space on the right and crosses from the byline. He's aiming for Zaniolo, but Maignan is out of his goal to catch the cross and win possession back for the hosts.18:48

  80. 13'

Mkhitaryan finds himself deep in his own half under pressure, but he's brought down by Milan's Krunic which alleviates that pressure for Roma.20:48

  81. 11'

Pellegrini looks to release Karsdorp who is tearing away down the right, but Hernandez is back to swing out a boot and clear the danger!18:44

  82. 10'

Milan have won their last two league games against Roma, and are well on their way towards winning three matches in a row against the Giallorossi in Serie A, for the first time since 1996!18:42

  83. 8'

GOOOAAALLL!!! Milan open the scoring!!! Giroud steps up and sends Patricio the wrong way, placing the ball into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 to the home side!! Roma are still fuming at the decision, but they've got to get on with it down as they're behind early!

    See Olivier Giroud's player card18:42

    Olivier Giroud
  84. 7'

PENALTY!!! The referee decides that the handball was worthy of a penalty, and Abraham is booked for his role in conceding it!18:40

  85. 6'

VAR! That shot took a slight deflection off the upper body of Abraham on its way through, and the referee is looking at the VAR screen to see if the contact warrants a penalty!18:39

  86. 4'

SAVED!!!! A Milan corner is headed away, before Hernandez fires the ball back towards goal with a sumptuous volley! Patricio has to get down quickly to his left to beat the ball away, and that was a fantastic save!18:38

  87. 3'

Mkhitaryan bundles Diaz to the ground about 40 yards from goal, and Milan will look to create the first attacking opportunity of the match from this free-kick.18:36

  88. 1'

Abraham kicks the game off for Roma, and we are underway in Milan!18:33

  89. The teams make their way onto the pitch at San Siro, and kick-off isn't too far away now!18:30

  90. Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo has scored more than one goal in a Serie A game against only two sides - Fiorentina and AC Milan – and will start up front alongside the Giallorossi’s top scorer Tammy Abraham for Jose Mourinho’s side.18:27

  91. The absence of Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli sees Theo Hernandez captain the side, whilst Pierre Kalulu and Matteo Gabbia, both of whom are usually used in wide or midfield roles, deputise in the heart of defence for the Rossoneri.18:26

  92. ROMA SUBS: Pietro Boer, Bryan Cristante, Gonzalo Villar, Carles Perez, Riccardo Calafiori, Eldor Shomurodov, Marash Kumbulla, Edoardo Bove, Nicola Zalewski, Felix Afena-Gyan, Davide Mastrantonio, Stephan El Shaaraway.18:10

  95. MILAN (4-2-3-1): Mike Maignan; Alessandro Florenzi, Matteo Gabbia, Pierre Kalulu, Theo Hernandez; Rade Krunic, Sandro Tonali; Junior Messias, Brahim Diaz, Alexis Saelemaekers; Olivier Giroud.18:10

  96. Roma currently lie in sixth, seven points off the final Champions League place. Should the visitors better Juventus’ result in their corresponding game against Napoli, they will overtake the Old Lady into fifth place in the table.18:01

  97. A mixed run of form towards the end of 2021 saw Milan slip to second in the table, behind city rivals Inter. However, this match presents an opportunity for the Rossoneri to move within just a point of the defending champions.18:01
