Inter beat Juventus in Serie A for the first time since 2016, with Vidal and Barella both finding the back of the net en-route to an important 2-0 victory. The hosts were in the ascendancy from the outset, with the early goal only adding to their confidence. An organised midfield and defence confounded the Juventus strikers, who were unable to work any openings of note despite Ronaldo and Morata playing for the full 90 minutes. Handanovic was never put under serious danger, while Inter were allowed to attack almost freely from the counter, exemplified most in the Nerazzurri’s rapid second goal. The disappointing evening for Pirlo’s side sees them stay fifth, while Inter’s win puts them joint-top with Milan ahead of their match tomorrow.

Inter have six days off before they travel to face Udinese next Saturday. Juventus are in action on Wednesday in the Italian Supercup against Napoli, before hosting Bologna next Sunday in Serie A.

That concludes our commentary of the Serie A fixture between Inter and Juventus. We hope you enjoyed it!

  1. 90'+5'

    FULL-TIME: INTER 2-0 JUVENTUS. 22:42

  2. 90'+3'

The fourth official indicates five minutes will be added for stoppages. 22:39

  3. 90'+1'

Hakimi bursts into the penalty area ahead of Chiellini and takes a shot high looking to put it over Szczesny, but the wing-back can only manage to put his effort over the crossbar.22:38

  4. 89'

Lukaku does well to shield possession and invite a challenge from Chiellini, who barges through the back of the striker - giving Inter a free-kick inside Juve’s half.22:36

  5. 87'

Bernardeschi’s corner fails to beat the first man as Brozovic is able to lower his head and clear the set-piece away from his penalty area.22:34

  6. 86'

Sanchez replaces Martinez with just under five minutes remaining, as Inter make a change in attack.22:33

  7. 85'

Inter are doing well to hold onto possession in the closing stages of the match, keeping Juventus’ attack at bay. Conte’s side are looking to sap every last second off the clock as his side head towards a clean sheet.22:32

  8. 83'

Juventus are the only team against which Conte has always lost as coach in Serie A; three defeats in three attempts. 22:31

  9. 81'

Hakimi chips a cross into the penalty area looking for Lukaku, but Juventus are able to scramble it away narrowly.22:29

  10. 79'

Bentancur’s corner is a poor attempt to locate a team-mate, as McKennie’s audacious overhead kick was the closest Juventus got to putting the set-piece towards goal before Inter’s defence are able to clear it away.22:26

  11. 77'

Confirmation of the change as Conte sends Gagliardini on in Vidal's place. 22:24

  12. 76'

Play has stopped momentarily as Vidal takes a seat on the pitch, stretching his hamstrings. It appears to be nothing more serious than some cramping - though Conte is preparing a replacement.22:24

  13. 74'

Juventus come forward once again looking to cut the deficit in half, but they’ve allowed Inter to get back into their defensive shape far too often. It’s been a poor showing from the visitors, as even Ronaldo has failed to make himself a nuisance.22:22

  14. 72'

Darmian replaces Young with 18 minutes remaining. 22:20

  15. 71'

Martinez drives towards goal, putting Chiellini off-balance in the process before curling a shot towards the far post that misses by inches!22:20

  16. 69'

This match is contested between the two highest scorers in Serie A this season: for Inter Lukaku (12) and for Juventus Ronaldo (15). The two strikers have scored combined 27 goals, 12 teams have netted fewer times.22:18

  17. 67'

Barella is booked for a challenge on Chiellini, sweeping the centre-back’s legs out from under him in an attempt to win the ball.22:15

  18. 66'

Juventus fail to convert a corner-kick as Morata sends his headed effort high over the crossbar.22:13

  19. 64'

Barella, Lukaku and Martinez queue up to shoot on-target after a rapid counter-attack, but it’s Brozovic who curls an effort towards Szczesny - missing the far corner narrowly.22:12

  20. 62'

Morata is booked for barging through the back of Bastoni in frustration. It’s been a tough game for the striker, who has seen little of the ball in the opening 60 minutes.22:10

  21. 59'

Young is booked for holding onto the ball after the referee had awarded a free-kick to Juventus, despite his protestations.03:36

  22. 58'

The third switch is the enforced change, as an injury to Frabotta will see him replaced by Bernardeschi.22:06

  23. 58'

Pirlo’s second alteration sees McKennie introduced, with Rabiot the man to make way.22:06

  24. 58'

The first switch for Juventus sees Ramsey replaced by Kulusevski.22:06

  25. 56'

Frabotta puts the ball out of play and goes down to the pitch, feeling something in the back of his leg. It looks as though he won’t be able to continue, as Juventus get players warmed up on the touchline.22:04

  26. 54'

Vidal gets free once again and takes a shot towards goal, with Bonucci’s block the only thing separating the strike from Szczesny’s target.22:02

  27. 52'

Bastoni is credited with the assist - and what a pass it was! The centre-back displayed vision and accuracy to get his team-mate through on-goal; rare traits for a defender that young. 22:01

  28. 52'

BARELLA DOUBLES INTER’S ADVANTAGE! Bastoni sprays a sweeping pass down the pitch for Barella to latch onto, before bringing possession into the penalty area ahead of Frabotta and slotting his finish high into the roof of the net! 2-0!

  29. 50'

Frabotta hooks a right-footed cross into the penalty area, but the Inter defence is ready and waiting to repel the danger.21:57

  30. 48'

Brozovic takes Inter’s first corner of the second half, but Frabotta is able to poke it away from the foot of Martinez before winning a free-kick for his side to clear the danger.21:56

  31. 46'

Inter get the match restarted from the kick-off! 21:52

  32. If Juventus are to force their way back into the contest, they’ll need to alter things in midfield. McKennie has only recently returned to fitness after suffering a small injury last week, but his introduction could be key if the Bianconeri are to contest the middle of the pitch. Kulusevski is also a likely introduction late, with his left-footed deliveries a real danger from open play. As for Inter, they have a wealth of experience to choose from should they wish to hold their slim advantage, with Darmian, Kolarov and Perisic all available to help shore things up.21:43

  33. Inter lead Juventus at the half-time interval, with Vidal’s headed finish after 12 minutes the only difference in the first 45 minutes. Conte’s side were the busier of the two in attack despite seeing less of the ball, with Szczesny forced into a number of crucial saves to keep the score down. The Bianconeri looked blunt going forward, with Ronaldo’s offside goal the only real presentable opportunity of the half for the visitors, who were unable to get anything going through the centre of the pitch. The hosts have certainly deserved their advantage, but with Ronaldo and Morata on the pitch, you feel they’ll need to score more than once if they wish to earn the three points.21:40

  34. 45'+1'

    HALF-TIME: INTER 1-0 JUVENTUS. 21:40

  35. 45'+1'

The fourth official indicates that two minutes will be added on to the end of the half for stoppages.21:35

  36. 44'

Vidal gets another chance to trouble Szczesny, but his first-time sweeping effort is once again ballooned over the crossbar from 18 yards out.21:33

  37. 42'

With under five minutes left in the first half, Juventus do not look likely to score as they’re being kept at bay by Inter’s rigid and structured midfield. The lack of space has really affected Pirlo’s side, with little to no impact being made through the middle.21:32

  38. 40'

Hakimi takes on two defenders inside the Juventus penalty area before passing towards the byline for Barella. The midfielder immediately heaves a cross into the 18-yard box, but Szczesny's punch gets it away. 21:30

  39. 39'

Szczesny makes another impressive save, reading Lukaku well to scramble across and block his first-time shot after Barella’s centring pass.21:27

  40. 37'

Ronaldo tries another shot from distance despite close guarding from Barella, but manages to put his effort on-target, forcing Handanovic to make a simple catch.21:26

  41. 36'

Bonucci receives the first yellow card of the match after going into the back of Martinez clumsily during an attempt to slow Inter’s attack.21:25

  42. 34'

A Juventus attack comes to a disappointing end after Martinez wins a cheap free-kick from a frustrated Danilo, who raised his leg far too high to win the ball safely.21:23

  43. 32'

Ronaldo lets a long-range shot go after cutting inside, sending his effort harmlessly wide of Handanovic’s goal. The Bianconeri have failed to trouble Inter with any real regularity, despite spending more time on the ball than their opponents.21:23

  44. 30'

Lukaku spins past Chiellini in midfield with absolutely phenomenal footwork, but a combination of Frabotta and a backtracking Chiellini manage to dispossess the striker before forcing a rushed shot from Martinez, which flies wide.21:21

  45. 28'

Juventus haven’t lost in nine of the last 10 away league games against Inter (W5 D4); the Nerazzurri's only win in this period arrived in September 2016, 2-1 under Frank de Boer.21:20

  46. 26'

Bentancur whips the free-kick into the penalty area but a well-positioned Inter defence clear the immediate danger.21:18

  47. 25'

Vidal lunges into a sliding challenge on Ronaldo, taking the player down on the wing. Juventus have a free-kick with which to curl in a cross - with the aforementioned Ronaldo lurking in the area. 21:18

  48. 23'

MARTINEZ BLAZES OVER! Lukaku curls a shot towards goal from outside the penalty area following a counter-attack which forces a fantastic diving save from Szczesny. Martinez is closest to follow-up the opportunity, but the striker somehow manages to send his shot high over the crossbar!21:14

  49. 21'

Morata does well in his defensive duties, easing in front of Brozovic to win the ball before earning a free-kick for his side. Juventus have been defending fairly deeply as of late, so an opportunity to move up the pitch is much needed.21:10

  50. 19'

Inter take a corner short to Brozovic, who immediately swivels and hits a dangerous shot at Szczesny’s goal, forcing the goalkeeper into a stooping save.21:08

  51. 17'

Ronaldo looks to turn Morata’s pass on the edge of the 18-yard box into a volley towards goal, but a perfectly timed step by Bastoni wins his side the ball.21:06

  52. 15'

Inter look confident after going up a goal, as Vidal gets on the end of another centred pass, this time sending his chance high over the crossbar - despite being unmarked.21:05

  53. 12'

Barella’s inch-perfect cross into the penalty area goes down as the assist for Vidal’s opener.21:07

  54. 12'

VIDAL MAKES IT 1-0! The immutable law of the ex is on full display as the former Juventus midfielder breaks the deadlock for Inter, rising highest to nod Barella’s cross past Szczesny!

    See Arturo Vidal's player card21:06

    Arturo vidal
  55. 11'

RONALDO SCORES BUT IT’S OFFSIDE! The score remains at 0-0 despite Ronaldo tapping home Chiesa’s volleyed pass, as the Portugal captain is flagged for being in an offside position.21:14

  56. 10'

Frabotta looks to play a pass inside the channel for Ramsey, but a well-timed interception from Barella temporarily wins Inter the ball.20:59

  57. 8'

Brozovic lines up and hits the free-kick towards Szczesny’s goal, but the hard-hit set-piece misses the target narrowly.20:56

  58. 7'

Hakimi is brought down by Bonucci cynically just outside the Juventus penalty area, giving Inter a chance to strike at goal.20:56

  59. 6'

A cross is curled into Ronaldo from the right, but a diving defensive header from De Vrij forces Juventus to play the ball back to the defence in order to start another attack.20:54

  60. 4'

Perhaps the smoke billowing into the stadium from the fireworks outside is the cause of Bonucci’s problem, but the stalwart centre-back re-enters the pitch almost immediately, which is a positive sign.20:54

  61. 3'

Play is stopped momentarily for Bonucci, who appears to have something stuck in his eye. The Juventus medical staff are on the pitch sorting out the problem, but the centre-back is going to have to leave the pitch before the match restarts.20:52

  62. 1'

Juventus get the match underway from the kick-off!20:49

  63. Juventus make four changes from their 3-1 win in the league over Sassuolo seven days ago. Chiellini replaces Demiral at centre-back, while Rabiot and Ramsey drop Arthur and McKennie to the bench in midfield. The final switch is enforced, as an injury to Paulo Dybala sees Morata get the start.20:36

  64. Inter make a single change to the XI that earned a 2-2 draw with Roma last time out, as Darmian is replaced at left-back by Young.20:35

  65. INTER SUBS: Andrea Pinamonti, Aleksandar Kolarov, Alexis Sanchez, Daniele Padelli, Stefano Sensi, Roberto Gagliardini, Christian Eriksen, Ivan Perisic, Matteo Darmian, Ionut Radu, Andrea Ranocchia.20:29

  66. INTER XI (3-5-2): Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Stefan De Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni; Achraf Hakimi, Nicolo Barella, Marcelo Brozovic, Arturo Vidal, Ashley Young; Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez.20:29

  70. Andrea Pirlo takes his Juventus side to the stadium where he spent the majority of his playing career, looking for a win that will thrust them back into the title race. Winners of their last three league matches - scoring 10 goals in the process - the visitors are in excellent form ahead of their crunch tie tonight, though they’ll be without a number of crucial players through injury and Covid. 20:24

  71. One of the most hotly anticipated matches in the Italian league calendar takes centre stage as Inter welcome the Bianconeri to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza to contest the 175th Derby D’Italia in Serie A. Former Juve manager Antonio Conte has his Nerazzurri side in second place - four points ahead of their opponents today having played a match more. Should Inter manage a victory (what would be their 47th all-time), they’ll go level with leaders Milan ahead of the Rossoneri’s fixture tomorrow. 20:16
